5 Essential Closet Pieces To Pull Every Outfit Together

5 Essential Closet Pieces - Stylista Esquire - @stylistaesquire

At this age, I’ve come to realize that no, I cannot pull together a new and different outfit  every single day of the week.  Especially when I have to head into the Office, go teach barre, attend an event, and/or meet Bryan or my girlfriends all in one day.  There are just too many things to do, PLUS I admittedly have too many things in my closet.  Let’s face it, you end up grabbing the same pieces over and over again right?!  That’s where my staple closet pieces come in handy.  These are 5 items I reach for to pull my outfits together.  Whether you are looking to save money or pare down your wardrobe, these items are a great base for any look.

1. Light Black Trench

For about 8 months out of the year, I only need a light jacket to head out the door.  I am usually cold, so I love light jackets that I can easily take on and off and that look great with my outfits.  This super light Leith double breasted black trench (pictured above) is perfect for throwing on over my work outfits or a fun top and pair of jeans.  The length is just right, so it looks great with my casual t-shirt dress here, or I could pair it with a pencil skirt and work top.  Adding a jacket like this is both functional and stylish.

2. Denim Jacket

As you can tell, I love jackets and I think they can make any outfit look pulled together.  A good denim jacket should be one that is not too light and not too dark, so that it is versatile.  I have this classic J.Crew denim jacket, pictured above, which is super soft.  I love the look of a denim jacket thrown over your shoulders – super chic!

3. Classic Nude Heels

A good pair of nude heels can take you anywhere, from work to play, and in between.  If you take your time and find the perfect pair for you, nude heels can last you many years and be well worth the money.  These Manolo Blahnik BB pumps are a tried and true favorite of mine.  The price is a bit steep, but within the last year, I have worn them at least once every week.  I’d call that a good investment!

Pick any price point you’d like, as long as (1) the color is right (don’t pick a weird off white color – you know what I mean); (2) there is no platform heel (save those for the club); (3) the toe shape suits what you are looking for (pointy = lengthening); and (4) finally, you can walk in them!  Nothing looks worse than a shoe you can’t even walk in…

4. Statement Bag

Having a statement bag (or two) can instantly pull your outfit together.  I’m not even talking about a Chanel or Gucci.  Think about what you use everyday.  If you need a bag that fits your laptop, pick a fun one that suits your personality, a la Kate Spade, Tory Burch, or Rebecca Minkoff.  These ladies make great, functional bags, that you don’t have to feel too bad about splurging on.  If you’re heading to the Office and need to carry the same bag everyday, you might as well make it a good one that you enjoy looking at.

I go a little extra and carry two bags everyday (NOT counting my gym).  I have a classic black Longchamp Le Pliage Medium tote to carry my laptop, notebooks, and paper files.  Yes, I still like to work with paper sometimes.  Then, I have my purse which holds my essentials.  I carry this Prada Saffiano Cuir or one of my LV’s.  I find this method to work for me, because I carry SO much stuff for work that I would ruin any decently expensive bag.  Plus, if I am meeting friends for HH or dinner, I can just grab my handbag and leave my workbag in the car.

5. Jewelry

Finding a set of everyday jewelry that suits your style is a no-brainer for pulling an outfit together on the fly. Eventually, it’ll be second nature for you to put the pieces on. Whether it’s a watch, bracelets, rings, it should represent you.  I always have my mom’s ring, my David Yurman Petite Albion ring, Cartier Love Bracelet, and David Yurman buckle bangle bracelet on (See the above picture).  They’re my signature!  Some of my blogger friends always have a watch on, or always wear the same stack of bangles everyday!  Pick something that suits you and your style.

Whew! That was a long one, but I hope you feel a little bit more at ease with putting the finishing touches on your outfit!
