Fall Fashion Staples

September is in full swing, but Summer is far from gone.  I’m writing this as B and I are on our way home from Dallas, TX.  It was so unbearably hot there!  The DMV is supposed to have its own heat wave this September, so I won’t be reaching for the sweaters and scarves just yet.  But everyone loves Fall clothing, and it’s always a great time to pick up a few staple pieces for the cooler weather.  Below are some items I am on the hunt for this Fall/Winter season.

Sweaters – I love unique sweaters with an off-the shoulder look or lace-up details and that are long enough to wear with leggings.  The main thing I look for is material and quality.  I tend to steer away from anything that will pill or snag easily, as I hate those little pills and I wear a lot of bracelets.  I also love open sweaters that I can throw on over a t-shirt or tank top to make an outfit.  This Topshop quilted sweater is a statement piece and I can’t wait to pair it will some jeans and ankle boots.  I am also quickly becoming a fan of Barefoot Dreams sweaters.  These sweaters are aptly named as the material is that cool, smooth material sometimes used for blankets.  I have this Barefoot Dreams long sweater and it’s so cozy!

Cardigans – Cardigans are in a separate category of their own.  They are so versatile and I always keep one with me to throw on during work or anytime I am out and about.  For various years, I have consistently updated my wardrobe every Fall/Winter with a few new cardigans from Loft and J.Crew.  While I do love their versatile styles and colors, I bought my first Tory Burch cardigan last Spring and fell in love with it.  The TB Simone Button-Front Cardigan is a classic style that will always look great.  The cardigans come in cotton and wool, so you can wear the cotton ones during the Fall and Spring and opt for the wool ones during the colder months.  While the price is steep, the investment is worthwhile to me as I won’t buy any other cardigans this season and hopefully for the next few seasons.

Boots  – I struggle with boots, as I have pretty muscular calves, so ankle boots are my best bet.  I got these Vince Camuto ‘Feina’ booties during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and have fallen in love with them.  They are super comfortable and look great with jeans, leggings, and dresses.  I also have these Timberland heeled boots, which are different from my usual style, but I pair them with leggings and a cool sweater (see above).  They have a nice chunky heel, so they are also great to walk around in.

As for some OTK boots, you can’t go wrong with the Stuart Weitzman Highland boot.  They are super pricey, but in an effort to justify such a purchase, you shouldn’t need another pair of OTK boots ever again.  I am happy to report that my calves fit in them! Woohoo! The material is super stretchy and the key it to fold them over and then stick your foot in.  Taking them off though…you’re on your own!  For the faint of heart, I’ve linked some dupes below!

Outerwear – Outwear is essential for Fall and Winter and I have tried to build a collection of classic staples that will last be for years.  I bought these two Burberry coats last year.  The Burberry Brit ‘Daylesmoore’ is a thick and heavy wool that keeps the cold out.  This ‘Finsbridge’ Hooded Coat is more for the Fall and rainy season, as it is a waterproof material.  It’s also a great coat for the Winter months when I want to wear something casual.

Trendier outerwear is also an essential.  An adorable cropped jacket or vest is great to throw on during the weekends.  I have this Barbour ‘Cavalry’ vest and can’t wait to wear it.  Add in a moto style jacket, like this BLANKNYC Faux Leather Jacket, and you are ready for every type of weather and style-need.

As for my ultimate wish list item, I am saving up for the Kensington Burberry Trench.  It’s the ultimate classic trench and the stone color will go with everything.  Wish my piggy bank good luck!
